Troubleshooting Guide

Solutions to common issues with Parents Corner Analytics & Recommendations.

Activity Tracking Issues

❌ Problem: Activities aren't being tracked

Symptoms: Your child uses the Kids Section, but no activities appear in the Parents Corner dashboard.

Solutions to try:

  1. Check if a profile exists:
    • Open Parents Corner
    • Look for the profile dropdown at the top
    • If no profiles exist, click "Manage Profiles" and create one
  2. Verify localStorage is enabled:
    • You cannot be in Private/Incognito browsing mode
    • Check browser settings to ensure cookies/storage is allowed
    • Try a different browser to test
  3. Check browser compatibility:
    • Use Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge (latest versions)
    • Update your browser if it's outdated
  4. Test with a simple activity:
    • Go to Kids Section → Stories
    • Read a complete story
    • Return to Parents Corner and refresh
    • Check if the activity appears
⚠️ Note: If you're using Private/Incognito mode, tracking will not work because localStorage is disabled in these modes.

❌ Problem: Some activities are tracked, but others aren't

Symptoms: Stories are tracked, but games or verses aren't (or vice versa).

Solutions to try:

  1. Ensure activities are completed:
    • Some activities only track when fully completed
    • For stories: Read to the end or answer comprehension questions
    • For verses: Complete a practice session
    • For games: Finish the game (don't just start it)
  2. Check for JavaScript errors:
    • Press F12 to open browser console
    • Look for red error messages
    • Refresh the page and try again
  3. Clear cache and reload:
    • Press Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac)
    • This forces a fresh page load

❌ Problem: Old activities disappeared

Symptoms: Activities that were previously tracked are no longer showing.

Possible causes and solutions:

  1. Automatic data rotation:
    • The system keeps detailed data for 90 days by default
    • Older data is archived as summaries to save space
    • This is normal behavior
  2. Browser data was cleared:
    • If you cleared browser cookies/storage, all data is lost
    • Check if you have an exported backup
    • Set up regular exports to prevent future data loss
  3. Wrong profile selected:
    • Check the profile dropdown at the top
    • Switch to the correct child's profile
  4. Storage quota exceeded:
    • Browser automatically pruned old data to make room
    • Use "Clear Old Activities" to manage storage proactively
⚠️ Prevention: Export your data regularly as a backup! Go to Data Management → Export Data.

Dashboard & Display Issues

❌ Problem: Dashboard won't load or shows blank page

Symptoms: Parents Corner page loads but dashboard is empty or stuck loading.

Solutions to try:

  1. Check internet connection:
    • Dashboard needs to load Chart.js library from CDN
    • Ensure you have an active internet connection
    • Try loading another website to verify connectivity
  2. Refresh the page:
    • Press F5 or click the refresh button
    • Try Ctrl+Shift+R for a hard refresh
  3. Clear browser cache:
    • Go to browser settings
    • Clear cached images and files
    • Reload the page
  4. Check browser console for errors:
    • Press F12 to open developer tools
    • Click "Console" tab
    • Look for error messages (red text)
    • Take a screenshot if you need help
  5. Try a different browser:
    • Test in Chrome, Firefox, or Edge
    • This helps identify browser-specific issues

❌ Problem: Charts aren't displaying

Symptoms: You see text summaries but no visual charts or graphs.

Solutions to try:

  1. Verify internet connection:
    • Charts require Chart.js library from CDN
    • Check if you're online
  2. Check if Canvas is supported:
    • Very old browsers don't support Canvas
    • Update your browser to the latest version
  3. Ensure there's data to display:
    • Charts need activity data to render
    • Check if activities are being tracked
    • Try a different time period (7d, 30d, 90d)
  4. Check screen size:
    • On very small screens, charts may not render
    • Try rotating your device or using a larger screen
  5. Disable browser extensions:
    • Ad blockers or privacy extensions might block Chart.js CDN
    • Try disabling extensions temporarily
✓ Good News: Even if charts don't work, you can still see all data in text format. The dashboard provides text summaries as a fallback.

❌ Problem: Dashboard is slow or laggy

Symptoms: Dashboard takes a long time to load or feels unresponsive.

Solutions to try:

  1. Reduce time period:
    • Switch from 90d to 30d or 7d
    • Smaller datasets load faster
  2. Clear old activities:
    • Go to Data Management
    • Click "Clear Old Activities"
    • Keep only last 30-60 days
  3. Close other browser tabs:
    • Free up browser memory
    • Especially close tabs with videos or heavy content
  4. Use a more powerful device:
    • Older phones/tablets may struggle with charts
    • Try on a desktop/laptop computer

Recommendations Issues

❌ Problem: No recommendations are showing

Symptoms: Recommendations section is empty or says "No recommendations available."

Solutions to try:

  1. Ensure sufficient activity:
    • Recommendations need at least 2-3 activities to generate
    • Have your child complete a few stories or activities
    • Wait a few minutes after activities are completed
  2. Click "Refresh Recommendations":
    • Find the button in the Recommendations section
    • This manually triggers recommendation generation
  3. Check if recommendations expired:
    • Recommendations expire after 7 days
    • New ones generate automatically with new activity
  4. Verify correct profile:
    • Make sure you're viewing the right child's profile
    • Switch profiles using the dropdown

❌ Problem: Recommendations don't seem relevant

Symptoms: Suggestions don't match your child's recent activities or interests.

Understanding and solutions:

  1. Recommendations are rule-based:
    • They follow specific patterns (recent stories, verse practice, themes)
    • Not AI-powered, so they may not always be perfect
  2. Check activity history:
    • Recommendations are based on last 30 days
    • Older activities have less influence
  3. Update profile age group:
    • Go to Manage Profiles
    • Ensure age group is correct (4-6, 7-9, 10-12)
    • Recommendations adapt to age
  4. Dismiss irrelevant ones:
    • Click "Dismiss" on recommendations you don't want
    • This makes room for new ones
✓ Tip: Use recommendations as starting points, not strict rules. Feel free to adapt them to your family's needs!

Storage & Data Issues

❌ Problem: "Storage full" or "Quota exceeded" error

Symptoms: Error message appears when trying to track activities or save data.

Solutions to try:

  1. Clear old activities:
    • Go to Data Management section
    • Click "Clear Old Activities"
    • Choose to keep only last 30 or 60 days
    • Export data first if you want to keep it!
  2. Delete unused profiles:
    • Go to Manage Profiles
    • Delete profiles you no longer need
    • Export their data first as backup
  3. Clear other website data:
    • Go to browser settings
    • Find "Storage" or "Site Data"
    • Clear data from other websites you don't use
  4. Use a different browser:
    • Each browser has separate storage
    • Try Chrome, Firefox, or Edge
⚠️ Storage Limits: Browsers typically allow 5-10MB of localStorage per website. Parents Corner uses about 500KB per profile with 90 days of data.

❌ Problem: Data seems corrupted or shows strange values

Symptoms: Analytics show impossible numbers, charts look wrong, or errors appear.

Solutions to try:

  1. Export data as backup:
    • Go to Data Management
    • Click "Export Data"
    • Save the file somewhere safe
  2. Reset the affected profile:
    • Go to Data Management
    • Click "Reset Profile"
    • Select the problematic profile
    • Confirm the reset
  3. Clear browser storage manually:
    • Press F12 to open developer tools
    • Go to "Application" or "Storage" tab
    • Find "Local Storage"
    • Delete keys starting with "kids-parent-"
  4. Start fresh:
    • Create a new profile
    • Let activities track for a few days
    • Delete old corrupted profile if needed

Profile Management Issues

❌ Problem: Can't create a new profile

Symptoms: "Create Profile" button doesn't work or form won't submit.

Solutions to try:

  1. Check required fields:
    • Name must not be empty
    • Age group must be selected
    • Try different values if one doesn't work
  2. Check storage space:
    • If storage is full, you can't create profiles
    • Clear old data or delete unused profiles
  3. Refresh and try again:
    • Close the profile modal
    • Refresh the page
    • Try creating the profile again

❌ Problem: Profile switching doesn't work

Symptoms: Selecting a different profile doesn't update the dashboard.

Solutions to try:

  1. Wait a moment:
    • Dashboard may take 1-2 seconds to update
    • Don't click multiple times rapidly
  2. Refresh the page:
    • Press F5 to reload
    • The correct profile should be selected
  3. Check browser console:
    • Press F12 and look for errors
    • JavaScript errors might prevent switching

Mobile-Specific Issues

❌ Problem: Dashboard doesn't work well on mobile

Symptoms: Layout is broken, buttons are too small, or features don't work on phone/tablet.

Solutions to try:

  1. Rotate your device:
    • Try landscape orientation for better chart viewing
    • Some features work better in landscape
  2. Zoom out:
    • Pinch to zoom out if content is too large
    • Or zoom in if text is too small
  3. Use a tablet or computer:
    • Dashboard is optimized for larger screens
    • Charts especially work better on tablets/desktops
  4. Update your mobile browser:
    • Ensure you're using the latest version
    • Try Chrome or Safari on mobile
